The following weekend I set out with my brother-in-law for the college in Alabama. I didn't know how long I'd be there but at least through the end of my contract for the school year. It might be fun, and I certainly needed to make some money, of which I was reminded as we passed my car parked at the curb. I waved goodbye to the figures standing on the porch. I had a footlocker and two suitcases which to me seemed light and to Mordecai a lot. I was already going back to school but this time in a new guise as a teacher. I felt that I could quickly learn what to do in teaching a freshman English course or a dramatic literature course, which was expected of me, but I had no training in directing plays, also expected of me, only writing them. I'd also be responsible for the drama club and any extracurricular theatrical productions. I was not totally in the dark but certainly not the equivalent of a theatre arts major involved in the many aspects of the bringing to life of a production on stage.

Marketing

4.1  Introduction

Whilst everyone uses the word, trying to define what marketing actually is proves to be more complex. Some will cite ‘advertising’, others ‘promotion’ or ‘display’. In many ways it is all these things and far more. The Chartered Institute of Marketing offers this definition:

Marketing is the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably.

In other words, by studying and evaluating the market forces and factors affecting a business, the business is able to put itself into a position whereby it may optimize the benefit of its position.

Without good marketing, it is extremely difficult for a business to understand and meet the needs of its customers; with a potential gap between their needs and what the business has to offer, there is the opportunity for another competing business to meet their needs more closely.

While the focus is often on advertising or selling, marketing is a key process that in effect starts with the development and procurement of goods and services to meet the needs or wants of the customer. Interpretation of this may be very important, as the customer is not always aware of these themselves, and often the development of a product meets a need that thus far has not been recognized.

Many students receiving supplemental Tier 2 interventions at Forest Glenn Elementary School seemed to be making good progress. In fact, several students had made such good progress that the SST deemed the interventions no longer necessary to their educational progress. A few students had not made enough progress to leave Tier 2, however, and a few others had not grown at all, according to the results from progress monitoring. The SST studied the progress-monitoring data carefully and subsequently decided to administer even more intensive interventions to the students who had not responded sufficiently to Tier 2 interventions.

When considering the growth of the mathematics program, remember to include families, another stakeholder group that leaders have traditionally marginalized in education systems. Educators certainly recognize the value of families as clients and often endeavor to engage families as equal partners in education in their mission statements. However, in reality, we often relegate families to the role of silent partners.

Effective mathematics leaders question how they will engage and empower families as advocates who support the vision for exemplary mathematics teaching and learning. When responding to this question, it is important to consider where the involvement of parents can be most effective in both the short and long term. To engage families in new ways, which parts of the mathematics program make the most sense?

The Dilemmas of Transitional Justice in Kenya

THIS CHAPTER EXAMINES the contradictions and challenges inherent in the efforts of the government of Kenya to establish criminal accountability of the masterminds of the postelection violence of 2007 and 2008. I argue that any expectation of criminal prosecution was misplaced as a result of the structural and political context that underpinned the 2007 election and the consequent postelection violence. I further interrogate the work of the Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC), and the opportunities offered by such a domestic restorative justice mechanism, versus the international criminal justice accountability mechanism embodied in the trials of the four alleged masterminds of the violence before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

On 30 December 2007, the Uasin Gishu district of Kenya exploded into an orgy of violence and destruction:

Large marauding gangs of 1,000–2,000 Kalenjin youth, brandishing machetes, bows and poisonous arrows, occasional firearms, matches and projectiles filled with petrol … blocked and manned a variety of roads with tree trunks and huge rocks, some of which were transported by tractors, throughout the district. They burned vehicles and tyres while refusing to allow anyone to pass. They also engaged in killing, rioting, and looting of Kikuyus and their property. This included numerous simultaneous attacks and cutting off all five entrances to Eldoret town, other roads and highways, as well as the main artery to Kisumu and Uganda, and beyond from Timboroa to Turbo. The violence was so overwhelming that for some time, long term trade was at a standstill with no supplies going in or out of Uganda and Eastern Congo. There was arson, looting, the destruction of property and livestock, maiming and gang raping of defenceless civilians. (Waki Commission Report 2009, 53)
